Economics Working Paper Series Firm Heterogeneity, Imported Input Quality, and Export Pricing in India
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using a novel dataset we examine the pricing behavior of Indian exporters, in particular looking at the relationship between export prices and firm capability (productivity) conditioning on the quality of imported inputs that firms use. Conditioning on firm productivity among firms that directly import, higher quality (higher price) imports are associated with higher quality (higher price) exports. We also find that export prices fall with firm capability, decrease with distance and increase with remoteness. Michael A. Nber Working Paper Series a Structural Model of Demand, Cost, and Export Market Selection for Chinese Footwear Producers
In this paper we use micro data on both trade and production for a sample of large Chinese manufacturing firms in the footwear industry from 2002-2006 to estimate an empirical model of export demand, pricing, and market participation by destination market. We use the model to construct indexes of firm-level demand, cost, and export market profitability. The empirical results indicate substantia...
متن کاملTariff Pass-through and Firm’s Productivity: A Case Study of Iran
T his paper investigates the heterogeneous reaction of Iranian exporters to the tariff rate changes, how export prices are influenced differently by the increase or decrease in foreign importers’ tariff rate. Using the Iranian transaction level export data and firm level data during the period 2002-2015, we find that tariff pass through for Iranian firms are incomplete and exporters ...
متن کاملHeterogeneous Firms and Import Quality: Evidence from Transaction-Level Prices
A key emerging insight in international economics is that the scope for quality differentiation can help to explain patterns in export prices at the level of products or firms. In this paper, a unified theoretical framework of firm heterogeneity in cost and quality is brought to bear on an expansive data set of U.S. import transaction prices collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Th...
متن کاملThe Connection between Imported Intermediate Inputs and Exports: Evidence from Chinese Firms
We use data on Chinese manufacturing firms to study the connection between individual firm imports and firm export outcomes. Since our panel covers the years 2002 to 2006, we can use changes in import tariffs associated with China’s WTO entry as instruments. Our regression results show that firms that expanded their intermediate input imports expanded the volume of their exports and increased t...
